Interview with Villa fans

We caught up with Damian who runs the excellent Aston Villa blog to ask his views on the season so far. Our thanks to him for his help.

Q. You’ve had a great season - are you happy with everything so far?
A. Am I happy with 5th? Yes, absofuckinglutely!

Q. What are your chances of getting a champions league slot?
A. I like to call it the Chumps League - only because it’s not really about the champions any more. When we won it in 82 it was about Champions but when Liverpool got in for finishing 5th it became all about the Chumps. But to answer your question, our chances are above average. We need a good run and for Liverpool and Everton to drop a few points.

Q. Who have been your best players this year?
A. Best players in no particular order; Olof Mellberg (who is leaving at the end of the season - last home game is Mellberg Day), Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor - both have developed under O'Neill.

Q. What's your assessment of Zat Knight?
A. Knight is solid but he tends to switch off.

Q. Where could you improve your team?
A. I want to give you an opinion, but I'll leave that to Martin O'Neill!

Q. What do you make of Tom Hanks being a Villa fan
A. Me and Tom go way back. He asked me one day what team I supported and I told him about the Villa. After that he was a convert – he’s a very intelligent man!

Q. What do you make of Fulham so far?
Fulham have gone backwards this season and unless you start something soon you’re going to struggle. I expect Fulham to stay up but mostly through luck - Sanchez was a huge mistake.

Q. Who do you think will be relegated?
My gut tells me Derby, Wigan and Birmingham City.

Q. Who should we look out for this weekend?
A. If I had to pick one player I'd say Wayne Routledge because it’s going to be his debut and we've not got Ashley Young, who we normally try to channel stuff through. If Martin O’Neill can do for Routledge what he has done for others he could be a super star.

Q. What do you reckon the score will be?
Sorry, but 3-1 to the Villa.

Interview with Arsenal fans

We caught up with the lads from the Inside Arsenal blog to ask their thoughts ahead of our match with the Gunners. Our thanks to them for their help.

1. How do you feel your season is going so far?
Many pundits wrote us off and it did seem that it would be a tough season ahead after the departure of Thierry Henry. It was really dependent on how the team would cope without him. They have been freed and to be joint top in January is brilliant and higher than many Gooners expected.

2. What silverware do you expect to collect this year?
I would hope we can win at least one cup. The Premiership will still be a tough challenge. With so many big teams out of the FA Cup I would hope Wenger's success here could continue. If we beat Tottenham on Tuesday, I fancy us in the Carling Cup.

3. Who have been your star performers and why?
Bakary Sagna - He came in any many wondered why Wenger bought a new right back. He has made our defence more solid and is good going forward. Always gives 100%.
Cesc Fabregas - faded a little lately but at the start was amazing. The new leader after Henry left and has been the fulcrum for the team.
Kolo Toure & William Gallas - together they have formed an awesome partnership and been one reason we are where we are.
Emmanuel Adebayor - Flourished since Henry left and has worked hard alll season, even when alone up front.

4. Has anything disappointed you this year?
The form of Gilberto and Walcott - Gilberto has dipped so much lately. Last season he was awesome, now he gives the ball away and adds no fight to the midfield. Theo has not come along as fans would have hoped. He still has much to learn.

5. Who do you see as your main rivals now?
Manchester United and Chelsea right now but surely Liverpool will click into gear soon?

6. What’s your view of Fulham?
Under Roy Hodgson they might be rejuvenated and against Chelsea they were unlucky. Whether they can keep working that hard and score more goals than they concede, we will see.

7. Are you concerned about any of our players?
Marlon King will add potency to the attack and on his debut could cause problems. Niemi has hade many a good game against us in the past.

8. Who do you think will be relegated this year?
Derby, Sunderland, Boro

9. What’s your score prediction for this weekend?
Fulham 1-3 Arsenal

Interview: Newcastle fans

We caught up with Ed Harrison of the Newcastle United blog (http://www.nufcblog.com/) to hear his views ahead of tomorrow's match. Our thanks go to him for his time.

Q. How would you describe your season so far?
A. Disappointing - we were doing quite well when we beat Tottenham 3-1 on Oct 22nd but then had a run of 6 matches with just 2 draws against Sunderland and then Arsenal. But we won last Saturday against Birmingham - who were good - and hope to keep that up at craven Cottage.

Q. What is your view of Sam Allardyce – is he the right man for you?
A. There's divided opinion on him still. We think he's good but he's come in for unreasonable rough treatment from the fans. But we think they have relaxed a bit with 4 points from the last 2 games and will give him a chance. As we said we think he's good for us..

Q. Who have been your star performers and why?
A. James Milner been very consistent and very good on the wings almost every game. he's a great young player coming through. Also another 21 year old Frenchman - Charles N'Zogbia has been very good. He's playing left back right now but is really a left winger. We expect him to be LB at Craven Cottage. Recently one of our new players Habib Beye, right back, has been looking good. We've had big problems in defense, with too many mistakes being made by our new defenders.

Q. What’s been your biggest disappointment so far this season?
A. Not being further up the league. Also the two recent home games with Portsmouth (3-1) and Liverpool (3-0) we were just hopeless. Terrible performances. But then against Arsenal we were great and really deserved all 3 points.

Q. Where do you think you will end up this season?
A. We want to finish in top 6 so we can get into Europe - that's what we really want. But we'd probably be happy now with top 8.

Q. How do you view Fulham?
A. As a team we can beat. Although when we've seen them Sanchez has them playing very well and they may be hard to beat. Aaron Hughes was here for a while and played over 250 games for us - a solid player and a great guy who married a Geordie girl. But we are really going for all 3 points on Saturday. Since you are below us in the league we think we should win - we'll see

Q. Where do you think we will end up this season?
A. Probably bottom 8, but don't think you are in any real danger of relegation. I've been impressed with Sanchez this season - he seems to be able to motivate the players but hasn't got too much skill at the club.

Q. Any of our players that you’re particularly wary of?
A. I haven't really looked to be truthful. Your 2 Americans Brian McBride and Dempsey look good. Also Kasey Keller - but I think he's now injured.

Q. Who do you think will be relegated this season?
A. Derby, Wigan and Middlesbrough. We are hoping Sunderland stay up - but they need to start picking up points.

Q. Finally, what’s your score prediction for this weekend?
A. It would be great if we can keep a clean sheet - I'd go for a 1-0 Newcastle win.

Interview: Manchester United fans

We managed to catch up with Paul Freeman who runs the www.unitedonfire.co.uk website, as well as United fan Stuart Parish ahead of Monday night's match at Old Trafford. Our thanks to both of them for their time.

How do you think your season has been so far?
PF: So far so good, the hiccup against Bolton last week so far. It started slowly when we had injuries and suspensions but we managed to grind out a few results to get our season going. Then we went on a spree where we couldn't stop scoring. Obviously, we'd have preferred a win over Arsenal and it was gutting when they scored in injury time, but looking back it was a good result (better than last season). I hope that the loss to Bolton is a rare mistake.

SP: I think Fergie has made some excellent buys, especially Tevez, him and Rooney are an absolute joy to watch, so much for the press saying they wont be able to play together, Fergie has also added a couple of exciting young players in Nani and Anderson, who have brought our average age down considerably, alongside Hargreaves, we know have a squad who can challenge on all fronts. We are also playing attacking football, which is what this clubs built on, we have won five out of five in the Champions League and are not too far behind Arsenal in the Premier League, so no complaints here, our dreams of the League cup will have to wait another year though.

Who have been the stars for you so far?
PF: We are a different team with Rooney and Ronaldo in the team, it almost goes without saying. Who wouldn't be? But the best, most consistent player has been Nemanja Vidic. A rock in defence, and also seems to make Ferdinand play to his best ability. Another player looking good is Anderson. With a reported price tag of £18million, he should be good, but we've been surprised quite how well he has been doing, and as a result, how little we've missed Paul Scholes.

SP: For me, personally, I think our defenders deserve a lot of credit for the start we have had, Patrice Evra has been immense since the season started, but Carlos Tevez has been unbelievable, his work rate, skill, vision, commitment, has been second to none, I can see him becoming a bit of a United legend if he carries on the way he is playing over the next few years.

Anyone you’re disappointed with?
PF: Your ex-player, Louis Saha. I think, because he has been out so much with injury he just hasn't been able to get a run of games in. With only three strikers available, we need him to come in and do well now, but in the last two games, he has been poor. When he was in a good run of form last season, he was the key player in our team.

SF: Saha doesn’t seem at his best yet, but he hasn’t played much so hopefully he can get match fit, and I would like to see Hargreaves start more with Anderson in the midfield.

What silverware will you end the season with?
PF: I'd like to think we can win the league and Champions League this season, but most likely just one of the two. We are already out of the League Cup and we'll do well in the FA Cup again, probably. I think the league will be hard to win this season, Arsenal are looking very good, and Chelsea have quietly got themselves back into the race.

SF: The title is the one most reds want, but we need to prove ourselves in Europe too, if I had to choose, I’d take the title every time, its harder to win and a true test of any team.

Is there anything about your team/its tactics you'd change?
PF: I'd like to see another striker come into the squad, but apart from that, I think it is spot on. The 4-5-1 formation is mostly long gone.

SF: I can’t understand why Fergie plays John O’Shea in so many different positions than defence, but he’s won nine Premiership titles, so who am I to judge?

Who would you like to see take over from Fergie?
PF: Hard question. I think it will probably be Queiroz and Fergie will go just as soon as we win the Champions League (so another 5 seasons then). I'd like to see an ex-Red get a go, and of the current managers I think Mark Hughes has done a great job at Blackburn, so I'd go for him.

SF: I honestly have no idea at the moment, I see Fergie being around for a few more years yet, so it would be best to make that judgement then.

How do you view the Glazers?
PF: They have plunged the club into debt and raised ticket prices so the fans are paying for their own club. I think worse is to come. I fully support MUST (Manchester United Supporters Trust) and hopefully one day the Glazers will sell up.

SF: Would you trust a family that to a man wear NHS specs? My season ticket has risen by over 40% since they took over, we are now saddled with even more debt, all season ticket holders have been forced into the Automatic Cup Scheme, so you could say there’s a lot of bad feeling amongst match going reds about the price hikes, especially the ACS.

What's your view on Fulham this year?
PF: I think you will do enough to stay up this season. You are currently top of the relegation third of the Premiership and as long as you pick up points against your rivals, you will stay up. Have to say that I prefer Chris Coleman to Lawrie Sanchez as a manager though. I did think you were relegation bound at the start of the season.

SF: Honestly, I haven’t seen you play at all, so I can’t comment, a lot of United fans tend to be very insular and only follow United or results which influence United, that’s what I am like, if United aren’t playing, I’m not really bothered.

Any of our players you're wary of?
PF: Danny Murphy because he always seems to score against us. Well, when he was at Liverpool anyway. Maybe David Healy will start to reproduce his Northern Ireland form against the bigger Premiership teams.

SF: Same as above.

Where do you think we’ll end up?
PF: There are at least 3 sides much worse than you, so to pick a place completely at random, 14th.

SF: Mid table.

Who will be relegated?
PF: Derby, Birmingham and Wigan. Although Sunderland and Middlesbrough are looking really suspect as well. It is hard to say (apart from Derby) because even a team reasonably placed in February can go on a dreadful run and go down.

SF: Hopefully Bolton, Middlesbrough and Wigan, in terms of football they don’t offer much to the premiership

What will the score be on Monday night?
PF: Ok, I'm dreadful at picking the right score, so whatever I say will be wrong. Of course, I think we'll win, and the score will be 3-1 (Rooney, Tevez and Ferdinand for us, Murphy for you). So, now I've predicted that, it will be 1-0 to Fulham

SF: United 2 – 0 Fulham

Interview: Paula Martin, chairman of Supporters' Trust at Reading

We caught up with Paula from Star (Supporters' Trust at Reading) to ask her views on Reading's season so far and what she thinks will happen at the Cottage on Saturday. Our grateful thanks go to her for her time.

Q. How good was it to get a win over Newcastle on the weekend?
A. Extremely good, not just the result but the spirit that was back in the team. Steve Coppell summed it up for all of us when he said it was like seeing an old friend again.

Q. What do you make of your season so far?
A. Disappointing because the standard of play has dropped from last year, until the last game. We started so well playing well (if not our normal game) against Man U then losing narrowly against Chelsea when we could have won, but then something went missing that we finally saw again last Saturday.

Q. Do people going on about 'second season syndrome' annoy you - or have they got a point?
A. It annoys - if only because the statistics do not show any second season syndrome, the first season syndrome is the dangerous one! With luck we will consolidate this season and then we can hear all about third season syndrome next season.

Q. Who have been the best and worst performers for you this season?
A. The injured right wingers have been the worst as it has meant playing someone out of position on the right - since you nicked Seol and Rosenior is not at home there. The other disappointement has been Shory but he is showing signs of his old self again. Best is probably Dave Kitson who had a horrible season last year with injuries so could not really show himself at his best then but is now.

Q. How do you rate Steve Coppell?
A. Very highly. I spoke to a Crystal Palace supporter at the SD conference who asked for 'their Coppell' back!

Q. What's your view of Liam Rosenior?
A. Not really a right winger, and with our captain at right back, has not really had much of a chance to prove himself yet.

Q. Opinions are mixed at Fulham over Seol Ki-Hyeon...what's he really like in your opinion?
A. My opinion is mixed. When he is playing well he is immense but that is not every game. He appears lazy but that could just be appearance as apparently he is seen as a high tempo player in Korea so maybe he is just playing the Korean way.

Q. Where do you think you'll end up this season?
A. Mid table please

Q. Which players should we be wary of this weekend?
A. Whoever is playing, we should play our game and not play according to who you play.

Q. What do you think about Fulham this year?
A. Most Reading fans see them as a team to finish below us - but there is a feeling of support (as long as you do finish below us) because of Sanchez who we still see as a Reading boy.

Q. Which teams do you think will be relegated?
A. Derby, Middlesborough and Bolton, I think

Q. Finally, what's your prediction for this weekend's game?
A. Our first away win of the season, but not as high scoring as our game at Portsmouth!

Interview: Sunderland fans

We caught up with three Sunderland fans for a quick Q&A session ahead of this weekend's match at the Stadium of Light. Our grateful thanks to author Jeff Scott (JS) at http://www.methanolpress.com/; Jim Higginson (J) of the Black Cats of America and Judith Hood of the Sunderland AFC Supporters' Association (JH) for their time.

Q. How does it feel to be back in the Premier League? Are you here to stay this time?
Jeff Scott. I think you're supposed to aspire to Prem football but, to be honest, I prefer the Championship as grounds you visit are more 'real', the kick off times are more 'normal' and the likelihood of a good result is higher. I really hope we are here to stay but history suggests otherwise.
Jim Higginson. Great
Judith Hood. It is the only place to be.

Q. What's your honest appraisal of Roy Keane? The positives and any negatives?
JS. I must admit I've been pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of his approach. He's been there, done it and got the t shirt so that has to be good but the downside is he's not the finished article so he's still learning. Realistically, if he was we wouldn't have him.
J. He's doing a good job
JH. Postives: He has rejuvenated the club. Negatives: Timing-wise he didn’t come at a good time and as a result very few premiership players were available so we had to settle for second best.

Q. Who have been your best and worst performers this season?
JS. Nyron Nosworthy has the odd moment but has continued his revelatory form.
Grant Leadbitter has also stepped up to the plate Greg Halford has a long throw but has yet to impress
J. Pass.
JH. Best performer: Kenwyne Jones. Worst: No comment

Q. Are there any areas where you would like to see an improvement?
JS. We need to score goals to stay up, defending better would help and a skilful midfield would be useful.
J. Goals.
JH. A good midfielder who can put his foot on the ball.

Q. What position do you think you'll be in at the end of the season?
JS. 17th.
J. 16th or 17th.
JH. Hopefully sixth off bottom.

Q. Who do you think will be relegated?
JS. Derby, Bolton, Wigan.
J. Derby, Wigan, Fulham (Sorry, its early yet!)
JH. Derby, Bolton, Wigan.

Q. What's your view of Fulham this season so far?
JS. Better than under Chris Coleman but still not setting the world alight. I expect you to stay up without really drawing attention to yourselves.
J. Patchy.
JH. I haven’t seen enough of them to comment. Honestly.

Q. Are there any of our players you are particularly wary of?
JS. That combative player you got from West Ham (thankfully sent off this
weekend) & Kamara
J. No
JH. -

Q. Which of your players should we fear the most this weekend?
JS. K. Jones
J. ?
JH. -

Q. Finally, what do you predict will be the result?
JS. 2-1 or 4-0
J. 3-1 Sunderland
JH. -

Interview: Derby fans

We managed to catch up with Chris Smith who runs the Ramspace.co.uk site; Shakira from the Yankee Ram in Exile blog; and Dave from Derby County Supporters' Club Germany to ask their thoughts ahead of tomorrow's match. Thanks to all of them for their time.

Q. How are you enjoying life back in the Premier League and how has it measured up to your expectations?
CS. Not sure. The media exposure is great, the atmosphere is great, the games are better, the opposition is tough, the jump is massive.
S. Other than the thumpings we have endured, I have enjoyed our return to the top flight. The Newcastle win was awesome but I still fear for our survival at this point.
D. I am not enjoying life in the Premier League at the moment

Q. You've had some mixed results so far with heavy defeats, some battling displays and a great win against Newcastle. How do you rate the team's performance so far?
CS. Disappointing. At the end of the day we are bottom of the league. It's a massive jump, we are improving but some of the well publicised away canings were not nice.
S. Bi-polar. We play pretty well at home, look much more organized and are getting some points. On the road we look like a pub team with no clue of what's going on. I think that the awe of being in the Premiership was a factor at first; I can only hope this has worn off now.
D. I rate the performance as not too good

Q. Are you happy with the progress under Billy Davies?
CS. Yes. Bizarrely he's not actually that popular as a guy. As a manager you cant fault him. He took us form the abyss to the Premier league in 9 months. Enough Said.
S. Absolutely. He had a three year plan to get us up and we exceed that by far. He doesn't have as much as other clubs to work with. There a few times I have scratched my head at his tactical decisions but overall he has my total support.
D. Yes

Q. In which areas do you need to improve?
CS. Blimey! Defence would be an obvious call, but I would suggest wide right and left midfield.
S. What areas don't we need to improve?! We need a new back four, a goalkeeper would be nice and another striker. We are weak down our left so a strong left back or left sided midfielder would be nice.
D. Defence & Strikers

Q. Where do you think you will finish this season?
CS. 17th!
S. I think in the bottom three without some major improvement. I can see us being 18th or 19th. I just can't predict 20th. If we can get some key signings (see back four) we might squeak out 17th.
D. Middle of the table

Q. Who would you say have been your best and worst performers/performances this season so far - and why?
CS. The best was Newcastle because we won well and deserved to. The worst was Spurs away. They were there for the taking and we didn’t turn up.
S. Best: Matt Oakely and Kenny Miller. Both are our leading scorers, Miller came in and has had an instant impact. Pearson has also been fairly consistent. Worst: Our entire back four. They have been horrible as a group. Andy Todd had a great debut game and then seems to fallen off the radar.
D. The best performers have been Kenny Miller and Steve Howard. The worst has been Dean Leacock.

Q. Which players should we be looking out for this weekend?
CS. Steve Howard as he'll probably be playing for you in January! Otherwise Steven Pearson, a class act.
S. Kenny Miller, Giles Barnes, and maybe Robert Earnshaw. Miller can score at this level and has, Barnes is a game changer if he is fit, and Earnie finally got a goal for Wales, maybe that will translate for Derby.
D. Can’t say!

Q. How do you rate the Fulham old boys Eddie Lewis and Dean Leacock?
CS. Deano was awesome last year but started this season injured. He's just starting to form a partnership with Claude Davies and is looking good again. Eddie Lewis is OK. He's a trier with a decent left foot but in fairness he's just a square peg in a square hole until we sign someone better in January.
S. I was somewhat skeptical about Lewis signing but he has been pretty solid. He can cross the ball better then anyone on the squad and I think he is a positive influence on the team. Leacock, he is decent but I don't think he is a Premiership back, he has the attention span of a gnat at times.
D. Eddie Lewis great, Dean Leacock not to good

Q. What's your view of Fulham this season?
CS, Pre-season I thought Sanchez had bought well. Kamara is a barn door merchant for sure (6 chances to score a goal) but otherwise good signings. I'm actually surprised how you've slipped away. If you can get Jimmy Bullard fit that could be the key as he was always a great player at Wigan.
S. Pretty poor really. You have as porous a back four as us, but you can at least score goals. I think you guys are in for a dogfight with the bottom five clubs all season unless some signings are made in January. Dempsey is a bright spot for you, he has finally settled into the English game and will be a threat.
D. Well, to be honest you are better than us, but time will tell.

Q. What's your prediction for this weekend results wise?
CS. 2-2. End to end, open game.
S. I see draw written all over this,Derby is bound to score on the road at some point and I think it will be this weekend. Final score 1-1.
D. 1:3 for Derby

Interview: Pompey fans

We caught up with Chris Hougham, the chairman of the Isle of Wight Pompey Supporters' Club and Phil who runs Pompeyweb to get their take on things ahead of Sunday's big match. Our thanks to both of them for their time.

Q.You’ve had a great start to the year - did you expect it and to what do you attribute the success so far?
CH. A bit of cash and a brilliant manager; only problem is with the likes of James and Campbell there’s not a lot of long term planning. We should have won at Derby but that was cancelled out by some atrocious finishing by Tevez and Ronaldo when the Mancs came to Fratton.
P. I don't think anyone expected us to be up where we are at the moment when you look at our first few fixtures. We've played the so-called top four already and haven't done too bad considering. A point against Manchester United was the best we could have hoped for. We really should have done better against Chelsea as they were pretty poor, as were Liverpool, who we should have beaten if Kanu had brought his penalty-taking boots with him. We were totally outclassed by Arsenal though.

Q. How do you rate Diop? He seems to like it more at Fratton Park than he did at the Cottage.
CH. Diop has had three starts and we’ve taken seven points. He looks very sharp and plays in a central midfield three with Muntari and Davis. He gave an interview the other day and clearly had issues with Sanchez and how he enjoys the atmosphere at Fratton.
P. He appears to have fitted in well though there are still some who have their doubts about him; obviously not Harry though. Redknapp has been a fan of his for a while and tried to sign him a few seasons back. He's played well in the games for us so far.

Q. What's your take on Sean Davis? He was a real favourite with us until he went off to Spurs which is why he always gets a 'frosty' welcome.
CH. Arrived with Mendes almost two years ago and not really a favourite compared with the likes of O’Neil and Matty Taylor. I expected him to move on in the summer, but this season he has been a revelation although he’s already picked up four yellows.
P. So far this season has been his best yet for us. He's playing to his full potential now.

Q. Has Harry been totally forgiven now for departing for Southampton?
CH. There’s a few idiots on the fringe, largely Mandaric loyalists who still like to refer to him as Judas, 99% love him and appreciate what he’s done for the club….after all he got us promoted, got the Scummers relegated, came back and saved us and has now taken onto a new level.
P. Not really. There are some who would happily see him walk away though the majority are willing to accept him because he took Southampton down before returning though most still don't like him.

Q. Where do you think Pompey will finish this season?
CH. We’ll finish in top ten….comfortably. If Harry gets hold of a goalscorer in January it could easily be Europe.
P. There's talk of a European place this season though personally I'd be happy with another top ten finish.

Q. Are there any areas where you think Pompey need to improve? What things are concerning you the most at the moment?
CH. We haven’t got a ‘wide right’ player since O’Neil went ‘Boro…shame. No complaints otherwise.
P. This is probably the best Pompey team in many years. I was going to say that the lack of goals would be a major concern but after last Saturday's goalfest I don't think we'll struggle too much, unless we pick up any major injuries. Sol Campbell doesn't seem quite the player he was but it's still nice to have him in our team.

Q. Who have been your best players this season - and who should we be fearing the most this Sunday?
CH. Utaka has got genuine pace and Benjani is one the hardest working forwards you’ll ever see in the Premiership.
P. It's hard to pick an individual but, for me, I think John Utaka will be the one to watch. He has great pace and a good degree of skill and awareness to go with it.

Q. What's your view of the new-look Fulham under Sanchez?
CH. Two 3-3 draws at home and us winning 7-4 last Saturday all points to a 0-0 draw….you look very vulnerable at the back and a bit ‘cavalier’ going forward, but then again you’re always behind!
P. I'm afraid they are one of my candidates for relegation this season, which will be a shame because Fulham is always a good day out for Pompey. I feel the results have flattered them a little. Having said that, Diomansy Kamara will probably get the goals that will help you survive.

Q. What do you reckon the result will be this Sunday?
CH. If it’s not 0-0, I expect us to win because Distin, Campbell and James didn’t think last Saturday was all that funny! It won’t happen again….so…sorry….2-0 to Pompey.
P. I'm going for a Pompey win, but I wouldn't be surprised if we go and blow it. Whatever the result I reckon there will be few goals in the game.

Q. Finally, is that bloke bringing his bell with him?!!
CH. You’re talking about Anthony John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood….yes he’ll be there, he doesn’t miss, and he’ll have his bell providing the law don’t get heavy handed.
P. Ah! John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood. I'm sure he will be there with his bell and bugle, accompanied by his drum wielding friend and all the 'ner ner ner' songs.

Interview: Chelsea bloggers

We caught up with the mysteriously named BC, who runs the Blue Champions blog and to Ash Kirby, the web consultant for Swindon Blues (I think some of the latter's answers were tongue in cheek!) Our grateful thanks to both for their time.

Incidentally, to see a breakdown of our Premier League record at Stamford Bridge click here, and to read a preview of tomorrow's match click here.

Q. What do you make of the departure of Mourinho?
BC. I cannot avoid the cliché - a big loss to Chelsea and the Premier League.
Two sad things about Mourinho's departure - one is there was no pressing need to oust our most successful manager and the second is the manner in which he was made to quit. The whole thing could have been avoided or at least handled better by the club. Honestly speaking, surely something's wrong behind the scenes. The club could be Roman's but the team was/is certainly Mourinho's. As fans we feel completely ill-treated and betrayed. Enough said.
AK. Me personally am gutted

Q. Do you think Avram Grant is the man for the job?
BC. Straight answer is No. Avram Grant cannot be replacing someone like Jose Mourinho. Avram Grant does not have the pedigree to be managing the Chelsea of today. Whatever the club says, it seems almost certain that we'll get a more permanent replacement, so that Avram can return to his directorship of football. All said, I'd give Avram some time. Let's see what he's got. For all his eccentricity in sacking Jose, Roman is not a multi-billionaire for nothing.
AK. Not at all

Q. How confident are you that you'll end the season as champions?
BC. Well, given the current turbulence and the kind of competition we have this season, it would be a massive achievement to win the title. Arsenal and Liverpool are flying high but we know quite a lot about their consistency or the lack of it. If we are able to get over this whole Jose saga, if we do not lose players to other clubs/injuries, if African Cup of Nations does not impact us too much - we should be able to do it. But there are too many ifs you see. We have a great team with brilliant spirit, determination and winning mindset and killer instinct. I'm fairly confident.
AK. I am not

Q. How do you view Fulham? As rivals? As an irrelevence?
BC. Can I choose the latter? Kidding. Certainly, I won’t see Fulham as a rival until you get your own version of Roman! But the derby is always fun and interesting but always seen as a three-pointer. That said, I’d like to see Fulham in the top half of the table.
AK. In terms of a threat, none

Q. What do you think of the new-look Fulham team under Sanchez?
BC. I should admit that I’ve not seen the Fulham matches this season. I thought Chris Coleman was quite good but Sanchez should be better. With all these players he has bought this season, you should only improve, something like Eriksson’s YouTube youngsters.
AK. I preferred Coleman but he seems to be settling the team

Q. Are there any of our players you’re worried about?
BC. Worried, no. Wary, yes. Kamara, Dempsey and old boy Smertin in the same order. But I don’t think beating Terry, Alex, Belletti, Ashley Cole and finally Petr Cech for a goal, is that easy a proposition.
AK. All of them at the moment

Q. Who, on present form, should we most fear this weekend?
BC. Shaun Wright-Phillips is on real good form at the moment. He can be real threat and with the side midfielder role in 4-4-2, he is completely unleashed and also has people to cross the ball to. Watch out for him.
AK. Abramovich

Q. What do you think the score will be this weekend?
BC. 2-0. That would be the first match at the Stamford Bridge since the departure of the Special One. It would be an emotional one. There could be demonstrations, protests, songs and banners to show support to Jose.
Like Jose said, fans at the Stamford Bridge never had to cry because we never lost there under him. Avram knows the consequence of losing that record a week after Jose's exit. By all probabilities, we should win comfortably.
AK. 1-1

Q. You have had a fantastic start – to what do you attribute the success so far?
A. Good players who are not afraid of the ball and a great team spirit

Q. Is Sven the answer to your prayers or has he just enjoyed a lucky start?
A. I actually think Sven is the real deal; things can only get better

Q. Do you believe you are contenders for the Championship this year?
A. No that’s a bit too optimistic - top eight and hopefully a push for Europe.

Q. What do the fans make of Stephen Ireland’s, er, bereavements?
A. No comment

Q. Who should Fulham fear the most this weekend?
A. Elano, (Michael) Johnson and most of all Sven.

Interview: George Chilvers - Wigan webmaster

As part of our pre-match coverage we had a brief chat with George Chilvers who runs The Ultimate Wigan Athletic Website for his views on the season so far.

Q. What do you think of your start to the season? You’re in a good position at the moment
A. We’re delighted but have our feet on the ground. We’re doing well, and more importantly playing well. With the squad we have it’s probably going the way we feel it should.

Q. Who should Fulham fear the most this weekend?
Jason Koumas has provided solidity in the midfield that we lost last year when we lost Jimmy Bullard to yourselves. But Emile has been playing well, and showed that over the last week. I think he’ll now come back to League action brimming with confidence.

Q. Where do you think you’ll end up this season?
About mid-table. Hopefully we’ll win the games at home we should, do well away, and I think we’ll pick up some odd points from “the Big Four” which we haven’t so far. We’re not going to set the world alight (that’s next year), but good solid mid-table with no panic situations like last year.

Q. How has Michael Brown settled in?
Seems fine, but haven’t really seen much of him up to now. I think he and Koumas in midfield are going to be key to us this season. I’m really pleased we have him.

Q. What do you think the score will be on Saturday?
2-0 Latics.

Our thanks to George for taking the time out to answer our questions.

Interview: Fulham's Northern Ireland connection

The arrival of Healy & co has seen our support swell thanks to the addition of Northern Ireland fans at the Cottage. FtF caught up with Richard Cathcart, one of the members of the London Northern Ireland Supporters' Club...

Q. There are a very welcome number of green shirts in the crowd at The Cottage now. Does this mean Fulham are now the adopted club for NI fans?
I guess there'll be a mixture between those who have become FFC fans (for however long); those who will adopt them as their Premiership team of choice without really describing themselves as a "fan"; and those (who perhaps already support another Prem team) who will look out for them with particular interest. A few things certainly help; FFC aren't so "controversial" a team as to deter many people, nor provoke the same emotions, as the likes of Chelsea, Leeds, MU, even Millwall, etc. Plus being in London, FFC is more accessible than many clubs and tickets are relatively easy (and cheap!) to come by compared with almost every other Prem side.

Q. How have you been welcomed by the Fulham faithful/the club? Do you have organised trips over for matches?
I have to say, the welcome has been excellent, both unofficially by the fans, and officially by the club. It's a bit of a cliché, but there is definitely more of a community feel around Craven Cottage than most other Prem Clubs - most of whom have their heads stuck up their arses (inc. my own, THFC, I’m sorry to say). When the London NISC approached FFC about buying some Season Tickets for club use, they were v.well received - we even got a couple of freebies for the Bolton game. Plus FFC have added a page on the OS with travel arrangements etc from NI. Top marks all round, I'd say. As for trips from NI, I wouldn't say there will be too many organised trips as such, at least not until the Season is under way and clubs etc have time to make arrangements. But tbh, it's relatively easy for individuals to sort themselves out, meeting up with mates/family etc already in and around London, for a weekend "in the smoke", with football thrown in. Certainly, "The Larrik" at Putney Bridge seems to have been adopted as the regular meeting place, with 2 or 3 dozen NI fans assembling already before/after each game. This may increase as it gets better known.

Q. You’ve been to a few matches at The Cottage, what’s your opinion of the ground and set-up?
Actually, I remember CC from years back when it was open terracing and I have to say that despite my being a mouldy old traditionalist, it's one of the few grounds which has actually improved since it was redeveloped. I guess this is because it has acquired enhanced facilities and comfort, without losing character at the same time. Obviously the listed status of the Johnny Haynes Stand and the Cottage itself helps, as well as the setting. And I like the fact it still has floodlight pylons!Plus if the trek from Seven Sisters Tube up the High Road to White Hart Lane has got to be the dreariest prospect in English football, then the walk from Hammersmith Tube down Fulham Palace Road and onto the Thames Path by the River has got to be one of the most attractive - much better than your typical trudge along congested roads to some featureless "Shoe Box Stadium" in the middle of an Industrial Estate, which is increasingly the case with football clubs these days. Also, I don't know if it's just early-season optimism, but the atmosphere is better than at a lot of clubs with bigger grounds/crowds. (That said, there is NOTHING like Windsor Park on a wet and dark Wednesday night, with a crowd of 14,000 Green and White Army absolutely tearing the place down! If any Fulham fan ever somehow gets the chance of a ticket, take it: it's like nothing you'll ever have seen or experienced, believe me!)

Q. Have there been many NI-Fulham connections in the past – apart from our George Best who also played for a little while in Manchester?
Too be honest, some clubs (e.g. Burnley & MU, or Arsenal before they "went foreign") traditionally enjoy a reasonable connection with NI, whilst others don't. I'm never quite sure why that is, but until now, FFC fell into the latter category. As regards NI players, Best's time at FFC was too brief and long ago to have made much of a lasting impression, but Big Maik Taylor is hugely popular with the GAWA, and I believe was well-liked at CC. (Good keeper and good lad)

Q. We’re yet to see anything of Aaron Hughes. What do you think of him and what can Fulham fans expect when he’s fit and starts playing?
AH is the consumate professional, of the type every club needs, to set an example. In that respect, he's like e.g. Dennis Irwin at MU, or Nigel Winterburn at Arsenal: not the most eyecatching of players, but very consistent and reliable. I imagine he's what Managers term a "Low Maintenance" player.I'm sure LS will pick him as centre back, from where he has long captained NI (though he has played nearly all his club career with Newcastle and Villa at right back)Whatever happens, he'll never be a "Big Time Charlie", nor a troublemaker, and it will only be when you've seen him over a period of time that you'll realise how important he is to the team - especially if they're going through a sticky patch.

Q. Chris Baird has received some mixed reviews from Fulham fans so far. What’s your take on him and where is his best position?
Fair enough, from the 3 1/2 games I've seen him play, CB hasn't been at his best - though he seems to make a miraculous goal-line clearance every game he plays! He started out as a very highly rated young fullback at Southampton, but for a variety of reasons, his career stalled, as the club was in turmoil with Boardroom and Managerial shenanigans . But he stuck by them, until George Burley took over and realised what an unused asset he had, especially at Centre Back. Saints fans loved him, and will tell you he was a "steal" at £3m.I know he has taken the place of a popular player in Rosenior, but I hope the FFC fans don't pick on him, since it never helps. Besides, if LS rates him, then it won't make a blind bit of difference what the fans think - Lawrie will do things his way, or not at all!Anyhow, he was made NI Captain for the first time in Aaron's absence last month and arguably was our Man of the Match (at Centre Back, admittedly).

Q. How good do you think David Healy can be? He has already been nicknamed ‘God’ by Fulham fans! .... Similarly, was Steven Davis worth the money?
In truth, there's no point in asking any NI fan about DH, since we are all totally and utterly biased! As far as we're concerned, he's a Living God. That's it, really. But if you want an explanation for the disparity between his modest club career and his exceptional international career (31 goals in 57 caps - better than Shearer, Rush, Law, etc), I can only give one explanation. DH is not the quickest of players (though no slouch), nor is he a big guy who can lead the line (though no pansy). In truth, there are a few things he can't do.That said, if you provide him with the chances, he is as good a pure finisher as any in England (the best in fact, imo) Which means you need to build the team round him to get the best from him. Leeds have been a total disaster for everyone else who got stranded there, so DH has an excuse (imo). Whereas, LS quickly cottoned onto his talent for NI, with stunning results. I can see why the bigger clubs were wary of trusting their fortunes around one player, but maybe LS feels that FFC, like NI, have no better option, so it's worth a punt (especially for a measly £1m).....My only reservation is that DH needs a big guy to play alongside him, to create space, lead the line, set up chances etc. Brian McBride was the obvious choice (sadly), but I don't think Kamara is. Perhaps Kuqi can fill in until McBride is back, but I fear it's a choice of either Kamara or Healy as the main man up front. And with LS having spent six million big ones from Mo's Piggy Bank, it will be hard to keep Kamara on the bench (unless he's not scoring).....As for wee Stevie Davis, once he settles in, gets used to London, his team mates and (most importantly) playing regularly, don't you worry, you've got a real gem there - Grand Larceny at £4m! In fact, unless something goes drastically wrong, your only problem will be keeping him when the big clubs come sniffing around after a season or two. (Alex Ferguson was very interested the season before last, when SD was Villa's POTY, but they wouldn't sell. Then O'Neill came along and clearly just didn't take to the lad, preferring that overpriced, overrated steaming heap of Bulgarian dung, Stilian Petrov...)In my opinion, Davis is the most all-round, naturally talented of the four NI guys at Fulham.Anyhow, you're probably thinking that I'm all those guys' Agent or something, since I've built them up so large! But in assessing Lawrie's NI buys, Fulham fans shouldn't think that he was being sentimental or rose-tinted: far from it! Instead, like that old TV advert which told us "It's the fish John West reject, which make John West fish the Best", it's the NI players whom LS hasn't signed which are the real mark of the ones he did. (Or to put it a simpler way, he has only signed the best NI players and in truth, four is not very many from a team which is currently on a bit of a roll)

Q. It must be great being a NI follower at the moment, how confident are you that you’ll be at Euro 2008…you might well be the only British team there!
In truth, it's Dreamland being in the Green and White Army these days! Think back to the bad old days at Fulham, when you were in the old 4th Division, crowds of 3,000, the ground looking like being sold, no hope anywhere to be seen etc...Then think about your best ever time at Fulham - getting back into the top Division....Well we've had exactly the same transformation, only in a shorter period, if anything (certainly many fewer games). And the thing is, it's with basically the same players! When LS took over a little over four years ago, we were 126 in the world in FIFA's rankings. Now we're 27th (and rising!) At the start of this Euro2008 Campaign, we were seeded 6th in our Group - behind Latvia and Iceland ffs! Now we're three big results from five games from qualifying in second place for the Finals (imo), ahead of Denmark (likely) and Spain (maybe), but behind Sweden (probably). In truth, we'll probably finish third, by a point or two, but what the Hell? It has been as enjoyable a time to follow Our Wee Country as I can ever remember - and it's 37 years since I first went to Windsor to watch them play. (Five-Nil vs Cyprus, with a certain G.Best notching a hattrick, now that you ask!)As for the other "home" countries qualifying, Scotland will probably just come up short, in an absolute killer group; Wales have less than zero chance; the Republic of Ireland will come third as the "Best of the Rest" (but miles behind Germany & the Czechs). And as for England... Oh dear, I really don't want to intrude on private grief, but let's just say that much more of Steve McClaren, and before long you'll be thinking fondly back to the good old days, under that Swede, or even the Turnip... (I mean to say, Emile Heskey. Just what is the guy thinking?)As it happens, such is the other rubbish in your Group, England might just scrape through to qualify, but that just means you will be stuck with McClaren that little bit longer, whilst your ultimate humiliation is played out on a bigger stage in Austria or Switzerland, for all to see.Sorry.

Q. Based on what you’ve seen so far, where do you think Fulham will finish this season – and feel free to be honest!
Tenth, give or take a place or two. And Sanchez will be raging at missing out on Europe. (He's a very focused, determined and ambitious man, is our Lawrie)

Q. Are there any other NI superstars that we should be looking at? Particularly the younger players at club we don’t hear much about.
Man Utd have three or four youngsters, inc. Jonny Evans, his brother Corry, and Craig Cathcart, who might just have what it takes to go all the way in the game. In which case, you've no chance of signing them. But if any should fall just short, they might come within Fulham's orbit. Beyond that, Lawrie has already put in a bid (said to be £3m or £4m, depending on who you believe) for young Kyle Lafferty at Burnley. He's a 20 year old Centre Forward in the Shearer mould, though not so precocious as he was, partly because he's still growing (He's 6' 4"!). Still got a huge lot to learn, and I'm sure Lawrie saw him as one for the future, but his attitude is good and he's getting well looked after by Burnley, who feel they've got a prospect on their hands. The other player you should watch is Chris Brunt, a left winger who's just signed for WBA from SheffWed for £3m (Lawrie was interested, but might have feared a price war, so signed Boazza and/or Cook, instead).Brunt was a highly rated youngster at Boro, whose misfortune was to be a contemporary of Stewart Downing. Downing, a local lad, was just that bit ahead of Brunt, who never really got his chance. Brunt then drifted for a couple of seasons at Wednesday, before emerging again over the last 18 months. My guess is that if he doesn't get promotion this season or next with WBA, then he might hope to make the Premiership, probably not with a top side, but perhaps for a middling team, who are prepared to take a punt. Fulham, perhaps? (Btw, don't be put off by his lazy appearance. Although he makes Chris Waddle look like Billy Whizz, it's kinda deceptive. I think. I hope. Or maybe not.)...Anyhow, there you go. Perhaps you wish you hadn't asked! I'm off to Latvia over the weekend, on manoeuvres with the Green and White Army. God knows how that will turn out, but win, lose or draw, I've no doubt our boys will do us proud - not least with the help of our "Thameside Battallion"!

Our grateful thanks to Richard (he's the one on the right hand side of the picture bottom right sheltering under the brolly) - and to the London NISC chairman Neal Anderson (in the top picture making a presentation to Lawrie) - for their help in this article and for supplying the photographs. Why not call into their blog http://londonnisc.blogspot.com/ - or better still, buy them a pint at the Larrick!

Interview: Paul Smith of Spurs Odyssey

We asked Paul Smith, who runs the Spurs Odyssey website (http://www.spursodyssey.com/), for his views on Tottenham's season so far and to give his predictions for how the match will play out tomorrow. Cheers Paul.

What do you make of the season so far for Spurs?
Pre-season we (and many pundits) had Spurs marked down as the best bet to break the current top four cartel. Personally, i think that our poor commitment in the first two games has blown that idea out of the water, and we already have a battle to match the last two years of reaching fifth place. We improved and beat Derby emphatically, and despite the loss at Old Trafford, our performance was one to restore some of our hopes for the season ahead.

What's your view on the Martin Jol situation?
I would have been calling for his head, had we lost against Derby. That didn't happen and he did make adjustments to the team and playing style that were not just dictated by the injuries. This led to an early rush of goals, and a thoroughly relaxing game for Spurs fans to watch, which is still a rare commodity, despite our second successive qualification for Europe through the League.

Martin Jol is a sincere, humble, honest and amiable guy, who in my view (and that of countless Spurs fans) has not deserved the degree of pressure that has been put upon him by the club's board, and the resulting media coverage. The board are entitled to make contingency plans, but failed to keep their activities quiet, and then when faced with press exposure also failed to reduce the resulting furore with weak explanations.

In conclusion, in my view, Martin Jol should be given more time this season to match the ambition of the fans and the club's board. Some fans will be happy if we manage to win a trophy or again make the UEFA Cup, but I must admit, I want Spurs in that top four!

Who should we be fearing the most on Saturday?
Berbatov hasn't hit his greatest form yet, but hopefully any transfer speculation will be truly out of the way, and he can give us one of his stylish and enthralling performances. He showed a flash of such quality at Old Trafford, with a pull-down of a high ball, control, turn and curling shot that had Van Der Sar beaten, but went just over the stanchion.

Gareth Bale made his debut last Sunday and was Spurs' man of the match, playing most of the game in front of Young-Pyo Lee on the left.

You saw in the FA Cup last season how players such as Robbie Keane can show great class, and if Spurs produce that sort of football again, you should be very scared!

What's your impression of Fulham this season?
I haven't seen too much of your team, but the results clearly indicate close calls, and of course you suffered through a referee's decision (or should that be lack of decision) in your game against Middlesbrough. Shame you didn't hold on against the gooners!
Lawrie Sanchez looks like being a breath of fresh air for you, and I fancy there might be a touch of the Northern Ireland v England spirit this Saturday.

What do you reckon the score on Saturday will be?
We always have to ask "Which Spurs side will turn up?" Equating this to Fulham and our poor record in recent away league games against you, will it be the side that scraped a 1-1 draw in the League, or the one that demolished you 4-0 in the FA Cup? I think it could be somewhere in between and I'll take Spurs to win a hard-fought game 2-1. It could go either way though!
